Casting Charts for Weddings

aspects, astrology, chart synthesis, event astrology, learning astrology, predictive, relationship astrology

I went to a wedding last night for a relative who isn’t legally a relative because I’m not legally married to her father. In a sense, I have a stepdaughter and now a stepson I don’t actually know very well. Someday, I may be a young step-grandmother. I actually like that idea a lot.

There is something magickal about weddings, despite my misgivings about the political nature of the whole thing. The ritual attempts to crystallize the magick that we can’t see, the bringing together of two karmically connected souls.

If you get married, you have karma. If you go through the ritual and the commitment, you have karma, no matter what happens in the end. I don’t think I have done a single synastry reading where there was no karma.

There is something frightening about a wedding though. I don’t have children of my own, so I don’t know what it feels like to have that fear of the unknown for something I have created, but if every man and every woman is a star, and if each star is meant to move in a path without interference, and if we cannot know the future, then we cannot really know what will be for our children, what they will create, and what is ultimately good for them. All paths, unique as they are, ultimately lead to the same place, the true will, without interfering with the true will of another, leads to that path. Thus, we can only hope that they find happiness, the indicator that they are on a true path, one we cannot create for them and one we cannot know beforehand.

It was a lovely ceremony, and it simply felt good. The vibe was wonderful. I like my in-laws, and I like being around them. I like talking to them, which is weird, because I have never otherwise been a family person. So it may be my desire to see all of their stars move in the sky as they will that enhances the sense I get. And maybe it was also because the bride herself was bubbling over with infectious joy. And maybe I needed to see something idealistic to combat the stark realism of my latest Saturn transit to my natal Sun. But I am a claustrophobic, and this wedding was indoors, and when I feel there is something wrong, or off, I cannot handle the energy and try to get outside and away, but I didn’t.

And we never know what the future will bring, but being me, I cast an event chart for the wedding anyway.

Suffice it to say — in contrast — this is not the easiest chart for a wedding.

21 Worst Case Scenarios in Your Partner’s Astrological Chart

Some people are like that.

Sometimes I would get a call in the early morning from friends of mine who have gone out, met a guy, and wanted to know right away if he’s a good catch. Usually, I think that anyone you meet at a bar at 2 a.m. is NOT a good catch, so I was already thinking no… before yawning and asking why. But I get it, and when you have an astrologer friend, and you are seriously looking for that special someone, you want to use whatever you have to cut to the chase and find out if you should give him your number or go home and sleep the cocktails off.

However, this is not really a good way to determine if you are compatible with someone you just met. The best way to do that is simply talk to them.

There is no one awesome chart. Now, I do have some charts of men whom I would never, ever recommend to any woman I know based on their chart alone, but that is a rare thing. Every chart is a culmination of things. They are holistic and interpersonal compatibility and maturity always shows how a certain aspect in one chart will manifest in a relationship.

Now, let me preface this by saying that just because one or two of these appear in the chart doesn’t mean that you should break up with your partner. You may have one or two in your chart. I have a couple of these myself. We all have our hang-ups and issues, and we learn to work on them through our relationships. This is not an exhaustive list, and some of these are worse than others.

But still, here are a list of aspects and planetary placements and the worst manifestations that could mean someone is not a good catch. I have rarely seen these aspects actually manifest into the worst possible scenarios, but just for fun, here they are:

The worst case scenarios:

Mars conjunct, opposite, or square the Sun. Everything is a competition, and to them, everyone is a competitor, even their spouses and children. It is their way or the highway, and they are impatient. It takes a long time for them to cultivate patience. They are aggressive and sometimes seethe with it like a guard dog.  This is especially true if Mars and the Sun are in the cardinal signs or Scorpio. They have a tendency to perceive an attack where there is none, and can be especially protective of their partner when there is no need for it. Better warn Grandpa not to hug you in front of this one. Actually, they would make a much better guard dog than a romantic partner. There is a reason why everyone tells you to put that one on a leash.

Mars conjunct, opposite, or square Moon. Temper, temper! They will wish you away into the cornfield.  These people have difficulty controlling their emotions and taking responsibility for them. They may be emotionally immature and have problems with women, and they especially have problems with strong and confident women. They have difficulty nurturing others and lose their patience with children and those who depend on them. This is the kind of person who flushes their goldfish down the toilet because they hate cleaning the tank and the goldfish is grateful for it.

FireBrand Bernie Sanders: Life Stages and Astrological Expression

Bernie Sanders has a Virgo Sun, Scorpio Rising, and Virgo Midheaven. Why then, does he come on the scene without pretense, afraid of chafing no one, with the energy of a child?

At 74 years old, Bernie Sanders is expressing his Aries Moon, conjunct Mars and opposite Venus.

The first part of the persona you will meet when reading a chart or meeting a person in the flesh is the ascendant. This is how they want to appear, and moreover, how they think they should appear, regardless of their sun or moon. A person usually expresses their ascendant when very young, and this is how the people at their origin tend to view them; often, when a person matures, they come to express the other parts of their psyche, most notably the sun. If someone tuts and tells them that they have changed, and says so disparagingly, what they mean is that they were more comfortable with the person expressing their ascendant and not their sun, which is a truer, more integral part of them that has always been there. The information received from living through the ascendant feeds the sun expression, and as time goes on, people tend to express their sun more; by the time they have reached middle adulthood, usually after the first Saturn return between the ages of 28-30, they are often in sun mode. By the end of the second Saturn return, between the ages of 56-60, the person is actually expressing their moon more.

Why is that though?

Astrological Tidbits II

The 8th house describes the nature of your immune system. Everyone’s immune system is different! The sign on the cusp, the planets in them and the nature of the traditional ruler (and the modern ruler) tell you about the nature of your immune system, especially any quirks. If you have a sign with a traditional and a modern ruler, like Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, you may have a more nuanced immune system.

To that end, the 8th house dealing with healing. The 6th house deals with hygiene and medicine, but the process of healing is an 8th house thing.

Modern rulerships or traditional rulerships? Traditional rulerships are best for anything that is more personal, like a medical chart or horary, whereas anything that deals with the world at large can have modern rulerships. However, for a natal chart, try taking both into account and blending the interpretations.

Gender bending fabulousness? Check for relationships between Uranus and Venus and Mars.

People with a lot of trines in their chart seem to go through life effortlessly. Unfortunately, they also tend to lack ambition, since they have always gotten what they wanted and people seem to just give it to them.

People with a lot of separate conjunctions in their chart, though rare, tend to not shine without a lot of effort, because each planet is always tied to the expression of another planet. This is someone who has probably not had to work hard in their youth and as an adult, tends to second-guess themselves. On the other hand, if they become confident as adults, they can be masters of synchronicity.

Here’s Why You’re Trying Way too Hard: Singleton Planets in the Birth Chart

astrology, chart synthesis, natal chart, single planets, special issues in astrology

Today and tomorrow, I have to power through all of my assignments because we are celebrating my boyfriends birthday on Sunday, and I have to not have to hand in outlines or writing assignments that day. But I have been wanting to make a proper post for a while. Law school is probably going well; I cant tell hubris from performance quite yet, and I have learned that I have a ten-minute window to gtfo out of class on Thursday and on a train before they get so crowded I have to wait them out. Now, I shake with excitement on Thursdays because I can head home and do the rest of my work in my pajamas and not have to set an alarm for the next day and I can listen to Robbie Robertson on my iPod classic and pretend that Im not a grown up yet.

Im a man with a clear destination. Im a man with a broad imagination.

One of the best things about being in school is that I know that the work doesnt carry the same gravity as paid work; that I am learning and that I have a lot of time to learn. I am happy though that I am going as an adult now, and I am learning that maturity is a relative thing. I have a classmate who just turned 27 and is lamenting her old age already. I have recently come back to gratitude in having long telomeres and a general refusal to get older.

*There is a secret to not growing old, or at least, aging very slowly. Perhaps I will share this at some point, but I will give you a hint: there is a definite mind-body connection there.*

But when hyper focused on something that one feels they have to compensate for all the time, there is usually an astrological indicator. One of those is having a single planet in an element.

Everything but the Moon, Venus, and Mars and the love houses: Synastry Tips I

astrology lesson, beginner, chart synthesis, synastry

If you want to marry, or to pair off for life, but are not sure what you want, do these things before you look at the Moon, Venus, or Mars:

First, look at your sun by sign and house placement. The right person for you will not get in your way. Thus, a person who has their sun in hard aspect to your sun (not including the conjunction) will make it very hard for you to be you and pursue those things that are meaningful to you. Your sun tells what you want in life above all things. Sagittarius wants freedom. Cancer wants security. Aries wants to be number one. Gemini wants activity. Leo wants attention. Scorpio wants intimacy. Aquarius wants to change the world. Taurus wants to take it easy. Virgo wants perfection. Pisces wants to be one with the universe. Capricorn wants to be immortal. Libra wants to share. Where is the sun? The first house just has to be me. The second house likes nice things. The third house wants to talk. The fourth house wants to keep house. The fifth house wants to have fun. The 6th house wants to work. The 7th house wants to agree. The 8th house wants to fuck. The 9th house wants to learn. The 10th house wants to succeed. The 11th house wants to commune. The 12th house wants to dissolve.

Second, look for someone who has planets in the same houses that you do. It doesnt matter as much the sign. Sign and element placement is important, but to emphasize this is to think that the initial meeting is all there is to relationships. This is where synastry goes wrong. When you have a hemispheric and especially a quadrant emphasis, you need someone who can relate to you well. Someone with emphasis in the 8th/9th/and 10th houses but with different signs will get along with someone else with the same quadrant emphasis but different signs. Sure, there may be conflict elsewhere, but someone with a 1st quadrant emphasis isnt going to be able to live with someone with a 3rd quadrant emphasis because their views and actions will be at odds. Someone with a 4th quadrant emphasis is better suited to someone with a 4th, 3rd or 1st quadrant emphasis, in that order, for example. Someone with a 1st quadrant emphasis is better suited to someone with a 1st, 2nd, or 4th quadrant emphasis, in that order.

Astrology Starts in the Imagination, Part I: Visualizing the Planets in the Signs and House

astrology, beginner, chart synthesis, learning astrology

It is easy to determine what the planet Mars signifies. Imagine a wild man in a loin cloth, rushing through the jungle at full speed, an unstoppable juggernaut ignoring the cuts and scrapes on his feet as he lets loose in a burst of energy. Or, imagine a warrior, brandishing his sword, ready for battle. This may in fact be how we imagine Mars in Aries, where it is the natural ruler of the sign. But, how do we imagine Mars in Libra, where it is in detriment and doesn’t express itself purely?

One of astrology’s learning curves is to synthesize the information we read from planets in signs and houses. We can learn the keywords for each planet, sign, and house. We can learn to put them together into simple key word descriptions. For example, the Sun in Cancer in the 3rd house can mean something like the ego is protective of siblings and communication, the nurturing personality is focused on communication. Okay, great. But the chart is a visual thing, a wheel with symbols and angles. It is only natural to want to visualize the planets in the houses and signs. If you are familiar with rulerships, exaltations, detriments, and falls, you know that not every planet is comfortable in every sign and every house. The expression is altered or filtered through the sign and house placement, as well as by the placement of the planetary ruler of that planet.
To visualize the planets in the houses and signs makes them more personal, more fun. They come alive, and we can see how they interact with each other.

Getting Rid of Old Things: Taste in the Astrological Chart.

astrology, chart synthesis, special issues in astrology

Aries Moon at 00 in the 1st house. I want brand new. The problem with brand new is that people of course, are not brand new, even if they reinvent themselves. Also, this is not financially feasible all the time. Slowly, over the course of about a year and a half, I have been been getting rid of stuff that was clearly picked out by my boyfriend’s exes. Of course, he won’t let me get rid of the expensive stuff – including this ugly oriental carpet we’re paying through the nose to clean – but I have been getting rid of ugly things. Cheesy wine stoppers. His ex-wife’s giant, inept paintings. Ornate table lamps. Things I find distasteful; things that look like the kind of furnishings that hillbillies buy when they win the lottery. Things that come in muted colors. Fake flowers, fake fruit.

Aries Moon likes bold design and color. We don’t like a lot of fussy stuff, and we HATE antiques. We think they belong in museums, not in homes. Second hand things are okay for some types if they can be re-purposed and the old owner is anonymous.

My boyfriend has better taste than his ex’s, I think, because he likes what I like, so hopefully, we can redecorate this place.

What are the tastemakers in the astrological chart? Not the moon per se; this is more about the home and what makes you feel secure and comfortable. Of course, Venus, but also, Jupiter. The planets on the cusps of the 2nd, 5th, and 8th houses? What about planets in these houses? How about the outer planets? Of course, the Sun must mean something, as well as the rising sign.
